Excel: what’s actually new in Office 2024

The headline changes for most people are in Excel. Office 2024 adds several text and array functions that were previously only in Microsoft 365:

• TEXTSPLIT – splits a single cell of text into multiple cells using a delimiter, useful for cleaning up pasted data without formulas built from FIND and MID.
• TEXTBEFORE and TEXTAFTER – pull out the part of a text string before or after a chosen character, for example separating a first and last name.
• VSTACK and HSTACK – combine multiple ranges or arrays vertically or horizontally into one, which helps when merging data from several sheets.

Office 2021 already has XLOOKUP, dynamic arrays and LET, which cover most day-to-day formula work. If your spreadsheets are mostly data entry, basic formulas and pivot tables, you will not notice much difference between the two versions in Excel.

PowerPoint and Word: what changed

Office 2024 adds Cameo, which lets you insert a live camera feed as a PowerPoint object during recording or presenting, and refreshes the recording and rehearsal tools. Word gains minor editor and formatting refinements rather than major new features. If you present a lot on video calls or record training content, Office 2024’s PowerPoint tools are a genuine improvement. If you mainly write documents and build simple slide decks, Office 2021 already covers that well.

Why the support date matters most

The biggest practical difference is not features, it is how long each version keeps receiving security updates. Which one should you buy?

Students and casual home use: either version works well for essays, spreadsheets and presentations. Office 2021 at a lower price is a reasonable choice if you plan to graduate or replace the PC before October 2026.

Small business or freelance use: choose Office 2024. Security support until 2029 matters more once you are opening client files and invoices daily, and Cameo is genuinely useful for client presentations.

Long-term single PC, used for years: Office 2024 is the safer buy, simply because it gives roughly three extra years before you need to think about replacing it again.

Short-term or project-based use: Office 2021 can make sense if you only need Office for a few months and price matters more than the support window.

What about Microsoft 365?
